Press line modernization

An eight-man team of mechanics, electricians and programmers from PTC PressEngineering handled the project “Modernization of Press Line PV05” on behalf of Electrolux in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany. Their task was to install a new transfer system (including a blank feeder) and fully automate the system in order to improve the performance of the press line, which Electrolux uses to produce oven components. In addition to dismantling the old unit, the PTC project team designed and produced a new transfer system with eight locking devices and a transfer feeder. They were also asked to design, procure and produce a new blank feeder that would automatically draw blanks from two stacks. The scope of work included the electrical engineering: circuit diagram, S7 software, visualization and safety control. They constructed the switch cabinets and handled the electrical installation and commissioning of the new unit. The project called for extensive expertise in mechanical and electrical engineering and programming in the field of presses and automation. What’s more, the schedule was extremely tight, with just three weeks between the dismantling of the old unit and commissioning of the new one. One particular challenge that the programmers faced was getting the 2 x 8 servo axes running synchronously in the transfer system.
